The BBC’s use of RealPlayer
by Adam on February 7, 2007
I came across an article on Neowin via vnuet.com about the BBC locking themselves into using Windows. What would this mean? Only Windows users would be able to access online videos, which is wrong for a taxpayer-funded organisation. Anyhow, I don’t want to wade into that arguement. I want to talk about the BBC’s use of RealPlayer.
This has been a pet hate of mine for longer than I can remember- too long. RealPlayer it turns out…cannot stream properly off the BBC site. It fairs better elsewhere, but I have tended to find that Windows Media, or Quicktime stream content much more smoothly. What goes wrong on the BBC’s site? Audio accompanied by the odd 3 frames of video. The BBC should switch to a better service. That’s just my opinion.
