Right, my mate doesn’t know I’m doing this…but I’ll link to his site HERE. I thought I’d talk about this because it reminds me of where I used to be with web development. My first ever web-related project was ‘Pure PS2‘ on MSN Groups. I achieved moderate success with it, and was pleased. It offered me easy page creation with a WYSIWYG editor. It also had the ability to have members, who were able to post on message boards within the site or ‘group’. However, MSN Groups has not been updated for ages and lacks certain essential features that are common place these days.
Next came MSN Spaces, which I started testing the beta of it, in roughly December 2004. I used it as my personal blog for about a year or 2 before not regularly updating it. I have not really been impressed with the switch to Windows Live Spaces because of performance issues.
In May 2005, I registered cityintheclouds.net, got some webspace, and had a crack at doing a little mini personal website. It looked very good but was a pain to update and it screwed up in Firefox. At the time I knew relitevly little about web standards. Shocking, I know. My mate’s site is upto this stage, with web standards. It has taken him a few weeks to get exactly what he wanted, but as this is his first site, I am very impressed.
Sometime later, I pulled the site down, and replaced it with a new homepage, linking to a WordPress blog hosted on my domain. I experienced loads of errors though with WordPress, so I scrapped that! Ahem…
Now, I am running this WordPress blog on wordpress.com which has more features, and is very stable. I will then bring up another homepage to link to this. Phew. Why am I telling you all of this? Because it is good to know where you came from, in terms of progressing in web development. Some people learn this through education, and others teach themselves.
Whilst I am familiar with HTML, partly XHTML and just about with CSS…I admire people who merge forums with websites such as Neowin.net. Those people are wizards! I just hope for a humble blog and a decent site that people may enjoy!
