The mob of YouTube
Jul 12th, 2008 by Los Havros
Ah, the mob. The mob have a lot to answer for. Mostly they are totally irrational and are always baying for blood. So what has the mob to do with me? My poor little video.
On my video I don’t think I was making any bold claims or outrageous statements, I was just proud of my PS3 games collection and was showing them to the masses on YouTube. So what happens? All the spiteful people crawl out of the woodwork (both Xbox 360 AND PS3 owners!) and start to spew their venom. So much so that I have had to delete some user’s comments and block any future comments on that video.
Here’s an example- an unedited quote. So if you think you might be offended, I suggest you skip this bit:
no not impresive u think u all dat cuz u have 7 games ur collection is week soooo soooo sooo week u wanna see a real collection chek my profile u soon like abritish piece of shit ur collection really suk
Would you take this sort of abuse? I didn’t, and here’s my response:
Thanks for the poorly spelt and irritating comment on my video. Nice to know the American education system produces such high calibre people (I wouldn’t mind, but YouTube has a built-in spell checker, it’s not hard).
1)I’m a student; can’t afford too many games. Seems like you either have a job or more money than sense
2)Yes I’m British, get over it
3)I don’t think any better of you for the size of your games collection or how many consoles you’ve got. As long as it makes you feel important.
I suppose what I’m trying to get at is that I’m a fairly rational and kind person, but if someone starts hurling unwarranted abusive and stupid remarks at me, I’ll hang them out to dry. This may sound harsh and I don’t take doing this lightly, but I feel fully justified.
Also it is very much worth noting that the same video (albeit cut off at the end) hosted on Flickr has not had any comments at all like those on YouTube. If I can keep any future videos shorter than the stringent requirement required for Flickr, I’ll host them all on Flickr. In light of my YouTube experience, it sounds totally worth it to me.
What do you think: am I right, or perhaps over-reacting?
