Doctor Who creator doesn’t care for Stargate

Doctor Who creator doesn’t care for Stargate- I’m sorry, but as much as I love Doctor Who,  Stargate is a far better franchise: the characters and stories are compelling, the special effects are fantastic, and everything is more or less believable.  I’ve seen some very silly things on Doctor Who that kills the suspension of disbelief.

There’s been a lot of surprisingly decent TV programmes out there, amidst all the fluff. Let’s take a look at what’s currently taking my fancy:

  • I’m enjoying Family Guy as always, and recently got Blue Harvest on DVD. Hilarious.
  • The new series of That Mitchell and Webb Look, which I feel has got off to a good start. Not so sure if it’s as funny as the first series though.
  • I’m quite surprised that I’ve got back into Torchwood again, which is also on its second series. I actually feel that this series is even better than the first. Maybe it’s because it has more serious, impressive episodes perhaps? Thoroughly entertaining.
  • Skins, series 2. I just find Skins very compelling. I’m not going to attempt to explain why, it’s just gritty and real I suppose. What strikes me is that each episode mixes light-hearted moments with moments of pure sadness and despair.
  • I think I have previously mentioned that I’m really into Reaper. I’m impressed by this show’s inaugural season. I hope it may continue, but I’m not sure if the concept has long enough legs.
  • As always, I’m loving Stargate Atlantis which is currently on it’s fourth season. What’s kept me hooked has been Atlantis’ increasingly darker storylines. In my mind Atlantis has always been darker than SG-1 and thus very refreshing. I’m looking forward to more!

That’s about it, I think. I have noticed though as I’ve been writing this that a lot of shows I’m watching are in their second season. Who said that TV was dead? I guess you’ve got to search for the good stuff and separate the wheat from the chaff.

The Matrix Trilogy on UMD

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

This post was originally written on the City In The Clouds blog.

You may be surprised by this, but this is not the most spontaneous purchase I have ever made.  Ranking higher up than that is probably getting Atlantis complete seasons 1 & 2  boxsets on DVD, and getting an original Xbox just to play Halo 2.  I have also tried to throw my money away by getting a PS3 on eBay, but sadly I haven’t won any bids at the price I’d like…

So, moving swiftly on… what does a Matrix fanatic like me do when he has every single Matrix DVD (trilogy, special editions, Animatrix) and games?  You get the films on UMD at £8 a pop.  Why would I do such a thing?  Well, I’ve been meaning to use my PSP more as a general multimedia entertainment device these days than just a plain portable games console (as shown by the Leipzig games conference).

My thinking is that I’ll be able to watch them on my PSP whilst traveling, or curl up in bed with it perhaps.  Now if only I had the new PSP-2000 I could hook it up to my TV.  Oh I forgot, I already own the DVDs…
